Municipal House

Municipal House

Prague's most prominent Art Nouveau building stands on the site of the former Royal Court Palace. This building is a frequent stop for visitors to the city as they are attracted by the elaborate gold trimmings, stained glass, sculpture and the regular exhibitions and concerts that take place here on a daily basis.

Historically the original building had been used as a seminary and a military college but was finally demolished and replaced by the present cultural centre with it's many exhibition / concert halls. The auditorium was designed by A. Balasek. On 28th of October 1918 the Municipal House was where the proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia took place.

Smetana Hall, situated in the heart of the building, is sometimes used as a concert hall or a ballroom. The interior is decorated with works by leading Czech artists of the first decade of the 20th century, most notably the famous Alfons Mucha. There is also a cafe and restaurant in the lobby hall where visitors can relax.
