The last few years has bought several big department stores to Prague including Marks and Spencers to mention one of many British shops in the same complex. A few years ago Prague would not have been a recommended shopping destination but this is no longer the case. However the city does have a small way to go before it offers the quality, standard of service and range found in most western european countries. Most of the complexes listed except Ikea, are located in the center of Prague.
Bílá Labut
Na Porící 23, Prague 1 tel: 2481 1364, 2421 1473 Mon - Fri, 8 am - 7 pm, Sat, 8 am - 6 pm
Branch: Václavské nám. 59
|
When it opened in 1937, Bílá Labut was the height of modernity. Today it seems to be
a bit old-fashioned, with a pretty grotty supermarket in the basement. The new branch on Václavské
námestí is no better - nothing but ugly 80-s clothes and cheap jewellery. |

IKEA
Skandinavska 1, Prague 5 tel: 2221 0182 |
Located quite far out of town, takes about half an hour by metro, the last stop (Zlicin) on the yellow line. There is also a great big TESCO adjacent as well as electrical, computers, fashion and carpet shops. Everything you will need in one complex. |

Kotva

Ugly but well stocked. Lots of cosmetics, stationery, bed linen, fashion, sports gear, car
accessories, furniture etyc. There’s a reservation service, bureau de change and shoe repairs in the basement,
next to a glossy, modern supermarket. Good for gourmet chocolates and French wines - less so for fruits and vegetables. |

Previously Tesco was owned by the American chain K-mart, which spent a lot of money revamping
the store only to sell it on to Tesco in 1996.
Currently Tesco is a good mix of Czech and Western products and a popular supermarket that
stocks American peanut butter, decent baked beans and British biscuits. |
